As the authority on quality for academic medical centers, UHC included not just one, but TWO of Emory Healthcare’s hospitals in its top 10 list. No other health care system has ever had TWO hospitals in the national top 10 UHC list simultaneously.

A top ranking by UHC means more than just great care. Since UHC ranks only academic medical centers that typically treat more complex patients than most hospitals, making their top ten list of the 101 participants reflects the ultimate assessment of organizational performance in setting the standard in quality and safety. In 2006, Emory Healthcare established a goal to achieve the UHC top 10 ranking and took on the challenge of meeting the rigorous standards UHC sets for measuring attributes of quality, safety and patient service. We are proud to have achieved this goal for our two largest teaching hospitals – Emory University Hospital (combined with Emory University Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital) ranked #2 and Emory University Hospital Midtown ranked #6.

There is no secret sauce to this phenomenal achievement. Emory is Expanding!

Emory Facility MovesYou may be surprised to see some new construction at The Emory Clinic (TEC).  Construction began on Friday, April 27, 2012, to improve patient access to Buildings A, B and the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University (Building C) in anticipation of construction of the planned Emory University Hospital bed tower.  The project, which will mostly affect the valet area next to Buildings A and Winship, will add lanes to make valet parking easier and faster and improve self-parking by creating an elevated, “conditioned” (heated and cooled) bridge from the main Hospital/Clinic parking deck to TEC  Buildings A and B, as well as leading to the hospital. Pedestrians will no longer have to compete with cars that are trying to enter the valet area in front of Building A.

If you are a patient and have a clinic appointment in TEC  Buildings A or B, please give yourself a few extra minutes to get to your appointment as pedestrian traffic will be slightly rerouted during the construction period.  Please continue to park in the main Hospital/Clinic parking deck.  If you have a hard time walking, we encourage you to take advantage of the valet parking options still open and available next to Building A.

If you are visiting Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, please consider using the Uppergate valet parking area to avoid the traffic.

Emory Makes UHC Quality Hospital Rankings History

Emory Hospital UHC Quality Hospital RankingsIf you frequent our health care blog, engage with us on Facebook or Twitter, or have spent any time on our website, you have probably noticed that there is a theme woven through all Emory Healthcare’s presence. That theme is our dedication to our top priority here at Emory Healthcare, which is to provide high quality health care that is truly patient-centered. Because this mission is the focus of our Emory Healthcare team, five years ago, we implemented a five-year strategic goal to hold ourselves accountable in achieving it. That goal was to rank in the top academic medical centers in UHC. To anyone who doesn’t work in health care, you may be wondering what UHC is and why the organization’s rankings matter.

UHC was formed almost 30 years ago, and is an alliance of 114 academic medical centers and 255 hospitals affiliated with those academic medical centers. As described by UHC, their vision is “to help members attain national leadership in health care by achieving excellence in quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness.” To reach this goal, UHC uses quantifiable measurements of hospital quality and hard data to determine how academic medical centers measure up in their ability to provide the highest quality patient care.

Since we challenged ourselves to set the pace for academic medical quality five years ago, every individual that makes up the Emory Healthcare team has played a role in our commitment to quality patient-centered care and has been regularly reminded by our Emory Healthcare leaders of the improvements in our quality rankings as a result of our team’s efforts.

After setting a very lofty organizational goal five years ago, we are extremely excited to announce that our team’s commitment to providing high quality patient-centered care has paid off in a big way. Not only did we reach our goal, but this year, UHC has recognized these efforts and the undeniable data that demonstrates Emory Healthcare’s commitment to quality. As of 2011, UHC ranks the quality of care provided by Emory University Hospital (including Emory University Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital) as 10th among the more than 100 academic medical centers ranked by UHC. The quality of care provided at Emory University Hospital Midtown has been equally as impressive, as it ranks 11th by the UHC. The 2011 UHC rankings mark the first time in UHC history that two facilities from the same organization have placed this highly in the rankings of hospital quality.

Just last year, Emory University Hospital and Emory University Hospital Midtown were ranked 45th and 42nd, respectively. The significance of our jump in the rankings is a true testament to the compassion, dedication and commitment of our Emory Healthcare team to truly put our patients, families and community first by devoting themselves to providing the highest quality of care. It’s also a testament to our patients, families and communities who entrust us with providing them the highest quality care each and every day. We thank our entire Emory Healthcare family and community for their critical role in helping us achieve a goal that has such a positive impact on all of us.

Emory University Hospital Among America’s Best Hospitals

Emory University Hospital AtlantaAmerica's Best HospitalsThe 22nd annual U.S. News & World Report rankings of America’s Best Hospitals place Emory University Hospital for the 22nd consecutive year as one of the top hospitals in the United States.  These rankings follow the publication’s regional rankings released earlier this year, in which Atlanta’s Emory University Hospital and Emory University Hospital Midtown were also highly ranked. National hospital rankings released today place Emory University Hospital with the nation’s leading health care facilities in ten categories and among the nation’s top 20 in five prestigious categories: cardiology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, ophthalmology, and kidney disorders.

The U.S. News & World Report Best Hospital rankings emerged over 20 years ago as a way to identify and showcase hospitals exceptionally skilled in handling the most difficult medical cases, such as brain tumors typically considered inoperable and specialized cardiac procedures.

The 2012 rankings of America’s Best Hospitals spotlight the top hospitals across the country out of more than 5,000 centers evaluated. Each of the hospitals featured in this year’s list are ranked nationally in at least one medical specialty and/or placed among the best hospitals rankings in its respective metro area earlier this year. Hard data stand behind the rankings in most specialties, including death rates, patient safety, procedure volume, and other objective data. Responses to a national survey, in which physicians were asked to name hospitals they consider best in their specialty for the toughest cases, also were factored in.

The purpose of the U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings is to assist in guiding patients who need an especially high level of care because of a difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age. “These are referral centers where other hospitals send their sickest patients,” says Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor. “Hospitals like these are ones you or those close to you should consider when the stakes are high.”

Site Approved for New 200+ Bed Hospital Tower in Atlanta

New Emory Hospital Tower in AtlantaIf you’ve ever taken a drive down Clifton Road, you’re familiar with our hospital and clinic facilities in the area. Ranging from Emory University Hospital, to the Emory Clinic, to the Winship Cancer Institute, or our additional clinic facilities down the street at 1525 Clifton. We’ll be adding yet another health care facility to our Clifton Road headquarters; this time, a 200+ bed hospital tower, complete with new operating rooms and emergency room.

The new Emory hospital tower will be located right across from Emory University Hospital on Clifton Road. This new development is not the only upgrades you’ll be seeing at Emory. The Emory-Children’s Pediatric Research Center (a partnership between Emory Healthcare and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta) is scheduled to be completed in April of 2013, and will be located near our other Clifton facilities, off of Haygood Drive.

The new bed tower is an important piece that will help us provide better access to our patients in our community environment. We are very excited about the ways the new hospital tower will enable us to build on our efforts to further improve the care we deliver.

These new facilities will create opportunities for improved access, patient safety and enhanced efficiency, which benefit our Emory Healthcare patients, families and the skilled members of our patient and family care teams.

Emory Home to Top Hospital in Atlanta, Nationally Ranked in 11 Specialties

Besides the name Emory, what do our Cancer, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Ear Nose & Throat, Geriatrics, Gynecology, Heart & Heart Surgery, Kidney, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, and Urology programs have in common? According to U.S. News & World Report’s 2011 rankings of Best Hospitals, all of Emory’s above listed medical specialties are ranked amongst the top programs in the country.

U.S. News ranks top hospitals and specialty programs nationally every year. This year, they also conducted regional rankings of hospitals in 52 metro areas across the United States. In both polls, Emory was a standout. We are very pleased to announce that Emory University Hospital has been ranked as the best hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

Emory is the only health care provider in Atlanta to have received over 10 national program specialty rankings. Aside from Emory, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (ranked separately in a category for Children’s Hospitals) was recognized with rankings in 9 specialties, and the Shepherd Center received 1 national program ranking. Meaning, of the 12 national hospital program rankings bestowed upon non-pediatric specific hospitals in the Atlanta area, Emory University Hospital received 11 of them.

What does this mean for you, our patients, families, and community members? It means that when you come to Emory, you get the type of patient-centered care you can’t find anywhere else in Atlanta or Georgia. It means that we continue to advance the possibilities with the latest medical research, technology, and process improvements that garner national recognition year after year. Emory – 4th Largest Contributor to New Drug Discovery in U.S.

First announced in the February 10th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, a new study has found that Emory is the fourth largest contributor to the discovery of new drugs and vaccines in the U.S. The contributors evaluated included federally funded universities, research hospitals, and federal laboratories.

The study found that public-sector research was involved in the discovery of as many as 20% of therapies approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from 1990-2007. Through studying the FDA review process, the researchers also found that public sector research institutes “tend to discover drugs that are expected to have a disproportionately important clinical effect.”

To determine impact of various research organizations, researchers for the study identified 153 FDA-approved drugs and vaccines that were discovered at least in part by public-sector research institutions during the past 40 years. The top five contributors were:

  • The National Institute of Health (NIH) (22)
  • The University of California System (11)
  • Memorial Sloan-Kettering (8)
  • Emory University (7)
  • Yale University (6)

The seven Emory products included HIV/AIDS drugs lamivudine (3TC) and emtricitabine (FTC), discovered by Emory scientists Dennis Liotta, PhD, and Raymond Schinazi, PhD, and their former colleague Woo-Baeg Choi, PhD. These two drugs are among the most commonly used and most successful HIV/AIDS drugs in the world, taken in some form by more than 94 percent of U.S. patients on therapy and by thousands more globally.

Emory University President, James Wagner, is extremely proud of the accomplishments of Emory researchers and scientists, commenting, “this study illustrates once again that our nation’s long-standing and world-leading policy of investment in research through universities and other public institutions, along with the responsible use of technology transfer, delivers a tremendous return through improved health for millions, innovative technologies, economic development and training for the next generation of innovators.”

When Your Hospital Visit Becomes a Stay – Choose Rollins Suites

When you’re caring for a loved one in the hospital, wouldn’t be nice to have your meals delivered your hospital room? Room service is one of the many comforts patients staying in Emory University Hospital’s Rollins Pavilion enjoy. But, according to Emory employee, Debbie Cohen, the most important reason to choose Rollins is that family members have a room next to the patient’s room.

Debbie Cohen, an Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center nurse stayed in Rollins multiple times while her mother was receiving treatment for lung cancer. At Rollins, there are two, adjacent rooms: one for the patient and one for the family member visiting them. Proximity to her mom during this rough time made Cohen choose Rollins.

The combination of these two rooms is known as the hospital suite, custom designed for privacy and ease. It includes a deluxe private hospital room and adjacent sitting room with pull out sofa bed, a large conference table and business and entertainment center.

For Cohen, it was a good match: “even though I live ten minutes away from EUH, my father and I wanted to be with my mother at all times. We needed more than a pull out chair. Having our own living space made it easier to sleep in the hospital. We also didn’t have to worry about meals since Rollins provides room service. When you are in the hospital for tens day these conveniences make a big difference. We were as relaxed as possible and could concentrate on supporting my mother.”

Rollins Pavilion hospital offers not only additional convenience but also the same quality care you expect from Emory. Rollins nurses have an average of 26 years of experience in patient care.

Rollins is a great option for patients and their families, especially for those who live far away. A physician’s order for admission to the Rollins Pavilion Hospital Suites is required for all Rollins patients. In addition to costs covered by insurance for patients of our hospital suites, patients are responsible for a room charge of $275 per night. This charge includes all patient amenities excluding room service.

What an incredible week it’s been for the team at Emory Healthcare. From the moment we tuned into weather reports and anticipated that this was the “real thing” I was amazed at the tremendous response of our healthcare professionals as they started to make their way back to work before a drop of snow hit the ground.

What we witnessed over the course of several days following Georgia’s first snowfall of 2011 was absolute acts of heroism by our Emory Healthcare team of nurses, physicians, leaders and staff. Our employees demonstrated their commitment to patient-centered care, and made our patients their first priority, using any creative means necessary to join their team at work. One of our team members even put on her golf cleats and trekked many blocks through the snow to be here. Other employees demonstrated their commitment by volunteering to step into roles outside of their own without hesitation.

I am always proud to be a part of Emory Healthcare, but this week, my pride has been elevated to the deepest admiration for our outstanding team of nurses, doctors, and staff. You are all a true inspiration, and our patients are truly fortunate to receive compassionate care from individuals like you. Some of you were too snowed in to make it to work, but I know you were with your colleagues in spirit as they kept operations running smoothly.

It is our priority at Emory Healthcare to deliver outstanding patient-centered care each and every day. I want to thank the thousands of dedicated professionals who make up our Emory Healthcare team and who, over the past week, again rallied around our patients and each other during one of the worst winter storms in Atlanta’s history. I also want to acknowledge and thank your families and loved ones, many of whom did not see you for three or four days while you spent day and night in our hospitals and clinics.

I thank you for the dedication that you have shown this week and that you show each day at Emory Healthcare. I am truly honored to work with you. But what good are these advancements if they don’t help and please the people we serve, our patients and communities? We are honored that our advancements are being recognized. For the 13th straight year, Emory University Hospital has been recognized as one of the nation’s top hospitals by the National Research Corporation’s (NRC) Consumer Choice Awards.

The Consumer Choice Award identifies hospitals chosen by healthcare consumers as having the highest quality and image in more than 300 markets throughout the U.S. This is the 15th year NRC has awarded hospitals whose consumers have recognized them for providing the highest quality healthcare.

“Having an opportunity to once again share this tremendous honor with the men and women who care for our patients and visitors each day is certainly a special and rewarding part of my job,” says Robert Bachman, Emory University Hospital chief operating officer. “Being recognized for what you do – and how well you do it – by the very consumers you are in the business of serving each day is an accolade that cannot be topped. I want to thank our entire team of physicians, nurses, support and business staff, volunteers and vast network of stakeholders and donors who strive to make Emory University Hospital a great center for care and discovery. Our customers have again spoken, and we will use this award as motivation to continue improving service in a safe, patient- and family-centered environment of care.”

Ginny Martin, president of NRC’s Ticker Division, says winners are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings collected in the company’s Ticker study. Of the 3,200 hospitals named by consumers in the study, the winning facilities rank highest in their Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. The Ticker study surveyed over 250,000 households representing over 450,000 consumers in the contiguous 48 states and the District of Columbia.

“Healthcare has become an increasingly important issue across the country and empowered consumers are making decisions for themselves and their families when selecting their healthcare facilities and services,” Martin says. “As care options multiply and financial challenges remain strong, consumer perception of quality continues to grow in importance. Dedication to providing high quality healthcare has become essential for all hospitals. In the face of adversity, these Consumer Choice award winners exemplify the dedication it takes to provide quality healthcare to their communities, and we are pleased to honor them through the eyes of their patients.”
