How Long Does Botox© Last?

Face LiftLines and wrinkles can be one of most telling signs of aging. They stem from animation and expression of the many muscles in the face. Therefore, reducing or preventing wrinkles can have a tremendous impact in maintaining a youthful appearance.

Botox© is the most well-known brand of neurotoxin that can decrease the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It works by paralyzing the muscles in the face, and has been safely used for decades. Other newer brands of neurotoxins include Dysport© and Xeomin©, which have shown great results as well.

Most common areas of the face that are injected with Botox© are “crow’s feet” which form at the outside corners of your eyes, especially when smiling or laughing, “frown lines” that form on the forehead and between the eyebrows that can give an angry look to the face, “bunny lines” which form on the bridge of your nose, and lines around the mouth that can give a sagging appearance to the face. Treating some or all of these areas, often in conjunction with fillers, can take years off your appearance.

Unfortunately, the effects of Botox© (or any neurotoxin) do not last forever and the duration of the neurotoxin can depend on many factors. The effects of Botox© can depend on the following:

  1. Type of muscle being injected – muscles with more animation will lose the effects of Botox© more quickly hence injections in the upper half of the face don’t last as long
  2. Number of units injected
  3. Injection technique
  4. Proper dilution of the medication by the person injecting the Botox©
  5. Brand of neurotoxin used
  6. Patient’s response to the injection.

Despite all of these factors, for most people, Botox© will still last 3-4 months. You will notice that the wrinkles will start to form again when the effects of Botox© wear off. It is best to receive your injections on a regular basis rather than waiting for the wrinkles to fully return. When injected on a regular basis, the wrinkles can appear less obvious, allowing them to go longer between injections.

It is important to remember that Botox© can have unwanted side effects and therefore, it is crucial to receive your injections from a physician or an experienced aesthetician. Here, at the Emory Aesthetic Center, our cosmetic surgeons have extensive experience and can explain the treatment and side effects. We offer a full spectrum of options and will customize a plan that best fits your needs.
